Diabetes Risk Calculator
Assess your risk of developing type 2 diabetes within the next 10 years based on established risk factors. This calculator uses validated clinical models to help you understand your personal risk factors and identify areas where lifestyle changes could reduce your risk.
How the Diabetes Risk Calculator Works
This calculator uses a validated risk assessment model based on the Finnish Diabetes Risk Score (FINDRISC) and other established clinical models to estimate your risk of developing type 2 diabetes within the next 10 years.
Risk Factors Assessed
The calculator evaluates several key risk factors that have been scientifically linked to diabetes development:
- Age: Risk increases with age, particularly after 45
- BMI (Body Mass Index): Calculated from height and weight
- Waist Circumference: Abdominal fat is a significant risk factor
- Family History: Having a first-degree relative with diabetes increases risk
- Physical Activity: Regular exercise reduces risk
- Diet: Regular consumption of fruits and vegetables reduces risk
- History of High Blood Pressure: Hypertension is associated with increased diabetes risk
- History of High Blood Glucose: Previous elevated glucose levels indicate higher risk
Risk Score Calculation
Each risk factor is assigned points based on clinical research:
- Age: 0 points (<45 years), 2 points (45-54 years), 3 points (55-64 years), 4 points (>64 years)
- BMI: 0 points (<25 kg/m²), 1 point (25-30 kg/m²), 3 points (>30 kg/m²)
- Waist Circumference:
- Men: 0 points (<94 cm), 3 points (94-102 cm), 4 points (>102 cm)
- Women: 0 points (<80 cm), 3 points (80-88 cm), 4 points (>88 cm)
- Physical Activity: 0 points (active), 2 points (somewhat active), 4 points (inactive)
- Diet: 0 points (fruits/vegetables daily), 1 point (sometimes), 2 points (rarely)
- Hypertension: 0 points (no), 2 points (yes)
- History of High Blood Glucose: 0 points (no), 5 points (yes)
- Family History: 0 points (no), 5 points (yes)
Risk Level Interpretation
The total score is converted to a 10-year risk percentage and categorized:
- Low Risk: Less than 7 points (<5% 10-year risk)
- Moderate Risk: 7-11 points (5-15% 10-year risk)
- High Risk: 12-14 points (15-30% 10-year risk)
- Very High Risk: 15+ points (>30% 10-year risk)
Limitations
This calculator has several limitations to be aware of:
- It does not diagnose diabetes or prediabetes
- It does not account for all possible risk factors
- It may not be as accurate for all ethnic groups
- It does not replace medical evaluation and blood glucose testing
For a definitive assessment of your diabetes status, consult with a healthcare provider who can perform appropriate diagnostic tests, including fasting blood glucose, HbA1c, or an oral glucose tolerance test.
